    Who are the Ruthenians?

Ruthenians have lived in the easternmost part of Slovakia and westernmost part of Ukraine — called Sub-Carpathian Russia — since the 14th century. Their dialect is related to Ukrainian, but still maintains its own distinct flair. Ruthenians are a real ethnic group, no matter how hard other nationalities have tried to assimilate them. In the 1991 Czechoslovak census, nearly 17,000 people identified themselves as Ruthenian.

Most Ruthenians either balked at the Ukrainian label, choosing Slovak schools over Ukrainian ones, or hardly heeded the ban, living their rural lives, preserving their language, and practicing the Greek-Catholic religion, which was banned in 1950, until better days returned.

It came to be associated primarily with those Ukrainians who lived under the Habsburg monarchy, in Galicia, Bukovyna , and Transcarpathia . In 1843, at the request of the Greek Catholic metropolitan of Halych , Mykhailo Levytsky, the Austrian authorities established the term Ruthenen as the official name of the Ukrainians within the Austrian Empire . In the 1870s the central-Ukrainian political theorist Mykhailo Drahomanov , as well as his Galician disciples Ivan Franko and Mykhailo Pavlyk , used the term rutentsi (a Ukrainianized version of Ruthenen) to denote narrow-minded, provincial, and Habsburg-true members of the Galician Ukrainian intelligentsia.

Nevertheless, Kiev and the «lands of the Rus» remained the prize that all wanted to possess. At the time, Ukraine, after a brief but defining period of independence under King Danylo, who established a capital in Halych [and who, by the way, founded the city of Lviv, named after his son, in 1254], and subsequent kings, had come under the control of the Lithuanian crown. Moscow was too weak to challenge the Lithuanians, but the Muskovite Tsars, each feeling a bit more confident and uppity than the last, began to refer to themselves as rulers of Vladimir, Suzdal, Rostov, Moscow, and all of Rus.
